Gorgeous newborn boy joy {London Newborn Photographer}

I was absolutely ecstatic when Paula asked me to photograph her newborn baby boy. I simply love photographing newborns - I feel blessed to capture this time for parents as it goes by so quickly :)

Baby K was born prematurely, which meant he was tiny and still very sleepy...although he was already almost 4 weeks old by the time we had our session. He patiently allowed us to pose and play with him during the session without making a sound....the perfect newborn model! I was extremely happy with the day as I also got to use my new baby props - a baby hammock and pod directly from the USA - both gifts from Paula on the day.

Richmond Park Introduction {London Portrait Photographer}

When Shannon suggested Richmond Park as venue for her winning portrait session (competition featured on our Facebook page), I was none the wiser of where she was referring to. Yes, I have to admit, I must be the last photographer in London to not have discovered this gem of a location. This, coupled with the perfect weather, made the day one of those "ideal-wish-everyone-was-like-this-one" sessions.

Even though the drive there took me much longer than expected, the moment I met the family I knew the day would be perfect. It is always fantastic to meet clients you get along with instantly and we surely did! When I was invited for a tea and cake session at the lovely Pembroke Lodge afterwards, I gladly agreed :)

Boudoir session love {London Boudoir Photographer}

Ok - so I have been looking forward to this shoot for a while. I mean...what is not to look forward to? 3 Fun girls, a fabulous venue and some Boudoir-amazing props, outfits and a fab make-up artist....and voila!

I am slowly but surely falling in love with Boudoir sessions and love everything about them. It empowers women and are so much fun to plan and do! You might be seeing more of these soon....

Wimbledon park fun {London Portrait Photographer}

You have no idea how much I looked forward to sharing the images of this shoot with you! Our shoot took place in a park near the home of the family in Wimbledon, London.

The day started out with rain warnings, but the sky miraculously cleared for the exact amount of time we needed to get the shots. The family was so adorable - they played along to all the ideas I had (even the wacky ones) without questioning my sanity. :)

This was also the first day I was joined by my new assistant/old friend, Deovonne. She rocked my reflector and made my life so much easier...it made me wonder how have I ever done it without her?

Welcome baby M - {London Newborn Photographer}

I absolutely love to photograph newborns! There is nothing quite as beautiful as meeting a brand-new human being, still untainted by the world and it's ways... (do I sound cynical?)

Meet sweet baby Michaela! She was super quiet and calm during her session at her home in South London, Wimbledon, and patiently waited for me to photograph her. I usually prefer to photograph newborns within the first 10 days when they are still sleepy and flexible for those cute newborn photographs, but baby M played along fabulously and we got a few precious images for her proud parents.

It has been a busy easter weekend for me so far! I had to catch up on a few sessions, but have to say that I loved doing them all.

I had the pleasure of photographing gorgeous lady M for her pregnancy session at her home in Wimbledon a few weeks ago. I loved her home the second I walked in - it also had fabulous natural light streaming through the windows and I could simply not get over her vintage leather sofa! I am in LOVE with this sofa!

Love at Waterloo {London Engagement Photographer}

I have to start this blog by apologising for my absence the past few weeks... It has been a hectic few weeks where I had to catch up with all my editing and shoots, but I am glad to report I am finally back on track and will try to blog more regularly from now on :)

A day at London Fashion Week 2010

This past week I was a "photographic" week for me. I seem to be mixing my design and photography work on a weekly basis nowadays, which is perfect in my books!

My friends over at Fashion Insight commissioned me to take some images for them at a few shows and I gladly obliged. Make sure to head over to their website to view my advertising banner, which should be up in the next week or two.

London Fashion Week was a first for me, and I was amazed at the amount of preparation that seem to go into each show. It certainly pays to show up early for shows (as I quickly discovered after not being able to find the perfect spot at the photographer's hub end of the runway on the first day). I quickly learnt from my rookie mistake and had some prime spots the following days.

I also met some pretty amazing fellow photographers which is one of my favourite things to do. I am always interested to find out why they love what they do and how they got into it, possibly because it was such an amazing journey for me. Here are some of my favourite images of the shows.

What is in a logo or brand?

What is in a logo or brand? This is the question I have to ask myself with every new logo design I do for my clients.

Logo and brand identity design comprise much more than a simple design. How many new businesses, clients or photographers know their strengths and weaknesses, competitors, threats to their position in the marketplace, how they want to be perceived, target market, vision for their business....and can convey this at a first meeting or in the first email? Not many can, yet those who can, struggle to translate this into functional visual information or design. That forms part of my job as designer.

Designing a logo is a collaborative process. As the designer, I need to understand who my client, their business and their target market is, where they want to go towards and what ideas they have about themselves as a business. I need to help my client and steer them in the correct direction with regards to making good design decisions. The client needs to actively be part of the process and invest in their visual brand. When clients are guided through the design process, they might expose critical issues they may not have been aware of or chose to ignore. They are forced to think about their brand or product in a way they might never have before. I have to put myself in their shoes - role-play, if need be. Only once we can successfully do this, can we start with their logo or business identity. This is one good reason why it pays to hire a designer rather than simply buying a pre-made logo from the web or using the Ariel font as your logo.

Great logo design comprise a few key terms: it's short, simple and widely-accessible. Think of your target market or potential new clients for your business. A logo should not be loud or in-your-face. It should attract as many clients possible and be easy to use in print or on the web, in colour or black-and-white. It usually has a unique font (or two), simple shapes and a recognisable colour scheme. Think of the biggest companies world-wide. They have understated logos and that work in a variety of situations and environments such as the web and print and attract the masses. Your logo should be easily recognised, yet not be the only part of your website or brand people remember!

Keep this in mind before you decide on getting your brand identity done. What is in your logo or brand? Keep it simple yet effective.

Colour palettes and themes

So this week was the busiest I have had in a long time. Setting up your own business is no mean feat...and this is only the beginning...!

I had to list everything I still have left to do and discovered a long list waiting for me at the end of the day. The first thing I started with was to work on my business image, logo and colour scheme (something I should have done ages ago...but had no time to do in 2009).

My colour scheme had to be simple yet stylish to go with both my design and photography work for clients and businesses. After playing around with various tones, I finally decided on this palette:

These colours have the ability to appear modern to go with my design work but can also be used in a mild combination for my images of families and babies. I also used the black, white and green tones as colour scheme for my wedding....so they have been haunting me for a while!

Next up is my logo, which is almost done, but need a few tweaks before you see it...that's a next blog!

My very first post....

Hi....and thank you for taking the time to read my blog.

I hope I entertain you as I start my journey as professional photographer, web and graphic designer....but most of all, I hope you love my work.

Up to very recently, I had an average 9 to 5 office job and envied anyone who looked forward to going to work. I started my own design business, Purple Apple Studios, in my free time just over a year ago, but could simply not get myself so far as to resign from my safe 9-5 work environment.

Yet, just over a month ago I finally did...and I have never felt so empowered, scared and excited to make anything work.

I am currently working on my photography website, which I aim to have up and running by the end of January. You will be the first to know when this happens! In the meantime, please follow me on Twitter or Facebook.
